Cambridge for Europe welcomes the news that Viktor Orbán has conceded defeat in Hungary’s general election, and that Peter Magyar will be Hungary’s new Prime Minister.
Dr Paul Browne, Chair of Cambridge for Europe, said:
“Today is a great day for the people of Hungary and for all European democrats. After 16 years, the voters of Hungary have overwhelmingly rejected the corruption and stagnation of the Orbán government, and defied the creeping autocracy that has undermined democracy and the rule of law in Hungary.
Hungary has voted to embrace Europe, and has roundly rejected the Russian regime and US administration’s attempts to interfere with this election. This is a terrible day for Putin, Trump, Le Pen, Farage, and corrupt autocrats and want-to-be autocrats everywhere!
We hope that the €90 billion EU loan to Ukraine, which Hungary was blocking, will now be approved quickly. Ukraine needs this funding to sustain its resistance to the Russian dictatorship’s invasion and occupation, and all Europe must support Ukraine in this vital task for the future of our continent.”
