His term as Ambassador of Ireland to the UK coincided with the 2016 Brexit referendum, and in 2017 he described Brexit’s implications for Ireland as the ” biggest economic, political and diplomatic challenge in the history of the state”.

Daniel Mulhall is currently the Parnell Fellow at Magdalene College. The Parnell Fellowship in Irish Studies was established in 1992 to mark the centenary of the death of Charles Stewart Parnell, campaigner for Home Rule and leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party, and enables Irish academics to spend a year in Cambridge.
